Hello everyone!
I recently got this Siligel Blender from Stylondon, which came in my September Bellabox. I'd been wanting to try this kinda sponge for a while, because the fact that it doesn't absorb as much product as normal sponges seemed pretty appealing, so I thought that it would be a good idea to actually compare it to my Real Techniques sponge and see how similar and different they are, and help you guys see which one would work better for you.
| STYLONDON | Siligel Blender
This is a sponge that's been very popular over the last months, given there have been many viral videos showing people who get a flawless complexion very easily with this sponge, which also promises not to absorb foundation at all, allowing you to actually use the product on your skin.
PROS:
- It gives a much fuller coverage, obviously depending on the foundation you're using
- It doesn't absorb ANY of the product, potentially making your makeup last longer as you need to use a smaller amount
- It is very easy to clean and very hygienic. You just wash it with soap and water and it doesn't require any special care. It also dries straight away
- You don't need to wet it before using
- The shape adapts to the contours of your face quite easily
CONS:
- It takes MUCH longer to blend the foundation on your skin
- It can make the foundation look patchy if you don't spend enough time blending (which is a lot of time)
- It's a bit harder to hold while doing your makeup, because it's quite flat
- Because it needs less product, you can very easily end up applying way more than you need, giving you that "mask" effect
RATING: 6/10
| REAL TECHNIQUES | Miracle Complexion Sponge
This sponge, which is a more affordable version of the Beautyblender, has been around for years. It came to replace those old triangular latex sponges that makeup artists used all the time, which made them waste a lot of product because the sponge would suck about half of it. This kinda sponge you can use damp, which makes blending really easy.
PROS:
- It gives a very natural finish
- It gives you quite a dewy look
- Very fast and easy to use
- It's got 3 different sides, which make it work for foundation, concealing and contouring, amongst other things
- Makes blending really easy, as it pretty much does the job for you
CONS:
- It's not as easy to clean, and even when you wash it, you end up with some stains that won't come off
- You end up using a bit more product
- If you use it dry, it won't do the same job and it will absorb LOADS of product
- You need to replace it once in a while, because it can hold bacteria that you can't see
RATING: 9/10
So here is how they look side-by-side:
I spent the same amount of time blending with both sponges and used the same amount of product. You can see how much more I could cover with the Siligel Blender than with the one by Real Techniques. However, the top one looks a lot more like skin and is blended a lot better than the bottom one.
Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, I prefer the "traditional" type of beauty blenders. I am way more familiar with them and I know how to use them a lot better, which of course doesn't mean I won't be using the silicone one again, because I'm definitely willing to give it more chances.
Overall, the Real Techniques sponge works way better for me. It is quick and easy to use, gives me a coverage that I'm comfortable with and I know what to do and what not to do with it. Of course, it is a matter of what works for you, because if you're all about full coverage, maybe the normal sponge won't work as well and you should incline towards the silicone ones.
I hope this post was helpful, especially if you're looking at getting a new sponge in the future :)
Thanks for reading me, xo
